While some people are naturally more creative than others, everyone can enhance their creativity by following the steps below. Creativity is a useful trait when it comes to public relations. Whether you need to plan a grand event, or come up with unique tactics for a campaign you’ve been executing for a while, knowing how to think creatively will aid you in all your endeavors.
1. Quiet Time
Make sure to spend some time each day unplugged from the world. That is, no TV, no radio, no internet, just you and your thoughts. Allowing yourself to daydream and actually ponder over ideas and issues will lead your mind to places that you would never have reached otherwise. That quiet time may be just what you needed to come up with your campaign’s “Big Idea.”
2. Spend More Time Doing What You Love
Many of us spend our hours working, sleeping, and then relaxing with TV and some good food. While watching television isn’t a bad thing, it is hardly a talent or passion that anyone loves to do. Television tends to be more of a time filler, so instead of wasting leisure time watching the tube, pursue a hobby that you truly enjoy. This will increase your levels of happiness, as well as increase creativity because you will be doing something that will work the brain. Any activity will result in more brain activity than watching the television, so you really can’t go wrong in choosing a hobby.
3. Keep a Notebook Around to Jot Ideas
Very often we are daydreaming, talking to a friend, or even sleeping, when we suddenly come up with a creative idea. Keeping a pad of paper around to write it down ensures that you will remember it, and can go back to it later for further developing. Too often we stay in bed, or just laugh the idea off. We tell ourselves we will remember it later, and we sadly never do. When that theme for an event comes into your mind at three in the morning, you will actually have it ready to present to your team later that day, rather than forgotten.
It may be obvious, but increased physical activity increases blood flow to the brain. This faster blood flow carries oxygen and glucose to your body allowing the brain to function better and more quickly. When you are on a deadline for a news release, you will appreciate your brain working as efficiently as possible.
5. Smile and Be Happy
There is a correlation between self-esteem and creativity; keeping a positive perspective helps you have confidence in your abilities. When brainstorming, you won’t be worried about coming up with a “bad idea” because there is no such thing. Once you have gotten out some ideas, then you can narrow out the weaker ideas. The key to unlocking creativity is letting go of what other people think and focusing on what you think. That confidence is all you need to unleash some less common but perfect strategies for accomplishing goals and objectives.
