For Immediate Release August 21, 2007 Linda P. Walton, 812-0125 The news is full of disasters such as wildfires, bridge collapses, chemical spills and mine cave-ins. These disasters are occurring more and more regularly. What can you do to insure that your family or business is prepared in the event of a local disaster? The Mountain Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross can help you prepare for, respond to and recover when disaster strikes. Preparedness information on earthquakes, wildfires, mudslides, floods, food and water storage and other emergency topics can be downloaded at www.RedCrossUT.org. Printed information is also available in limited quantities from the Mountain Valley Chapter office located at 865 N. Freedom Blvd in Provo. In the event of an emergency every family should have enough food, water, clothing and other emergency items to last 3-7 days. They should also be trained to provide care for minor medical emergencies. "The time to prepare is not when the disaster strikes," commented Garr Judd, executive director. "Peace of mind comes from being prepared." The Mountain Valley Chapter offers classes on CPR and first aid to the community for a small fee. For more information on these classes please visit www.RedCrossUT.org or contact the office at 801-373-8580. Business leaders should also consider forming an emergency response team and having members of their staff trained in these life-saving skills. The American Red Cross partners with OSHA for many safety programs. Several options are available depending on the size of the organization. The Mountain Valley Chapter is currently offering discounted training to religious organizations and United Way Partners. For more information on discounted training, or on the business options available, contact Ed Hall, health and safety services director at edhall@mtnvalleyredcross.org.
